After studying philosophy and cinema at Paris 8 and directing three short fiction films, including “Mon très cher frère”, Raphaël Girardot completed the Ateliers Varan training program and went on to serve as director and cinematographer on a dozen documentaries, including “Ex-Moulinex”… (Filmer le travail Festival 2000), “Le lait sur le feu” (awarded at Évreux 2007), “À te regarder” (FIPA 2011), and “Saigneurs” (Cinéma du réel 2016, awarded at Luchon 2016), all co-directed.
Just as his training was bolstered by working as a directing and editing assistant with filmmakers such as Léos Carax, Bertrand Blier, JJ Beinieix, JM Ribes, Claude Miller, and Michel Andrieu, his directing career has been enriched by numerous collaborations. He has served as a producer on documentaries by Raphaël Mathié, Olivier Pousset, and Marie-Pierre Brètas… Sound editor for fiction films by Sandrine Dumas, Thomas Vincent, Zaïda Ghorab, Claire Devers, Erik Zonca… Sound editor for documentaries by Wang Bing, Ossama Mohamed, Laurent Salters, Bénédicte Pagnot, Stéphane Mercurio, Anne Kunvari… Finally, an instructor at Créadoc in Angoulême, at La Fémis, and at the Ateliers Varan.
