Above the Russian Arctic Circle lies Vorkuta, a mining town that grew out of the Gulag. Here, indigenous nomads, immigrant workers and descendants of political deportees live side by side. In 2013, the town officially celebrated its 70th anniversary. Soviet miners have lost their stature, the mines are no longer profitable and accidents are commonplace. Lost in the middle of the tundra, this urban island built on the bones of prisoners from all over the world is slowly dying.
