Facteur Toubab

2003 • 63'
Facteur Toubab explores the bond connecting us to “the other,” as well as the distance separating us from them.
François Christophe bears witness to his deep attachment to Senegal and examines the nature of the strong ties he forged there during his many visits.
Yelli, his Senegalese friend, is an undocumented worker in Italy, while the rest of the family lives in Senegal with scant resources. The filmmaker—the only one able to travel freely—sits at the heart of an exchange of filmed letters, acting as both initiator and messenger; this approach serves as the most fitting expression of his role and perspective, allowing him to experience what he considers essential to the act of filmmaking: connecting what is apart.
